El Porto and the Strand

The surf break a block from the house, and the car-free beach path that runs past it.

El Porto is the northernmost stretch of Manhattan Beach, and the house sits less than 100 yards from the sand. It’s a close-knit surf community: don’t be surprised if a neighbor stops to chat about the surf report and your plans for the day.

The surf

El Porto is one of LA’s most popular surf breaks, with waves most days of the year. Early mornings bring the regulars; afternoons are usually calmer for swimming and boogie boarding. If you’re new to surfing, local surf schools run lessons on this stretch of beach.

The Strand

The Strand is a car-free path along the beach that runs from El Segundo south through Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach toward Palos Verdes. Walk it, run it or bike it, with an ocean view the whole way. Downtown Manhattan Beach and the pier are an easy trip south.

Around the neighborhood

Highland Avenue and Rosecrans have cafés, casual restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance. Bus stops on Highland and Rosecrans connect to the rest of LA, and the city’s own on-demand ride service, MB Wave Rider, goes point to point anywhere in Manhattan Beach.
